Family Legacies, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization. From Family Legacies' website: "It is the purpose of Family Legacies, Inc. to help make adoption a reality for prospective parents who do not have the funds to pay for the total cost of the adoption."
According to Brent Nelson, Family Legacies' Development Director, all gifts to Family Legacies are tax deductible and will multiply over and over for years to come. For example, a $5,000 gift effectively helps 8 orphans to be adopted in a 10 year period. Think about it: $5,000 becomes $40,000 in 10 years. And that same original gift will continue to be used over and over after 10 years. What a great investment!
On a side note, I've interacted with Brent Nelson several times over the past many months. I don't know of anyone who is more passionate about God's heart for orphans. In a recent newsletter Brent wrote:
I began to search the Scriptures to see what it said about this matter. I found God had placed a thread of expectation throughout the Bible to care for the orphan. With His expectation came His blessing for those that would care for the orphan, the widow and the poor. In fact, inside the book of James in the New Testament God tells us in two parts what is pure religion. The first part says, “…visit orphans and widows in their distress….” The word “visit” when used in the New Testament is no light matter. It is used of Jesus when He met people to offer them hope, care, and salvation. When Jesus visited someone it wasn’t a simple, social call. When He came to visit someone their whole life and outlook was challenged, and in some cases, changed forever. I learned too that “adoption” is on God’s heart all the time. He adopts us into His family when we place our trust in the finished work of Christ on the cross. Before we knew Christ we were outside His family. But now He has adopted us and transferred us from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light.
Here is how Family Legacies works according to Brent Nelson: Once a Christian family has completed their “home study” with an adoption agency, they can download a Family Legacies application off the internet to apply for a loan. Between $5,000 and $10,000 will be given in an interest free loan. A $5,000 loan is usually paid back in 15 months or sooner because of the tax credit the US government gives for adoptions. Once the interest free loan is paid back to Family Legacies, the money recycles again for another Christian family to adopt. This can be repeated over and over. In a 10 year period the $5,000 loan becomes $40,000, and makes adoption a reality for 8 adopted children.
