Learn more about Embryo Adoption

In 1997, Nightlight pioneered the first embryo donation and adoption program in the world and named it the Snowflakes® Frozen Embryo Adoption Program. This exciting adoption choice allows couples to donate remaining embryos and for others to adopt them and give birth to their adopted child. There are now more than 600,000 frozen embryos in storage in the United States, and hundreds of thousands more worldwide. All of the embryos matched with adopting families in the Snowflakes program are donated by families who originally created them for their own in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. The donated embryos wait in frozen storage until these parents choose to donate this gift of life!

Believe it or not, the miracle of giving birth to your adopted baby is possible. The Snowflakes Program makes it possible for you to adopt embryos from couples who have completed IVF treatments and have remaining embryos. These embryos are currently stored in fertility clinics and cryobanks throughout the U.S. and are waiting for a loving home. If you have remaining embryos are are interested in donating them visit our Donate or Move Your Embryos page.

As an adoptive parent, you receive autobiographical information, medical health history, and pictures from the family whose embryos you adopt. You adopt all the embryos a family has, and the embryos are transported to your local fertility clinic. Your doctor can perform the frozen embryo transfer and you can finally hear the long-awaited words, “You’re pregnant!”

Prior to being matched with embryos, you will have an adoption home study. You can learn more about the process at our Adoption Home Study Services page. The Snowflake Embryo adoption program is available for people worldwide, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Europe. If you live in Southern California, Colorado or South Carolina, Nightlight will perform your adoption home study.  If you live in another state, you can find a licensed adoption agency, or Nightlight can come to you and complete a Snowflake family assessment.

For a list of agencies that perform embryo adoption home studies for Snowflakes, visit our Snowflakes Partner Organizations page. For a list of embryo adoption home study agencies in other states, visit the Embryo Adoption Awareness Center website.

Over 325 babies have been born through the Snowflakes Program, and dozens of families are awaiting a loving couple to adopt their embryos. Snowflakes tracks details associated with our embryo adoption matches. We are pleased to report to you that we are currently experiencing a 45% frozen embryo transfer success rate. This means that 45% of the embryos that survive the thawing process and are transferred into the prepared mother’s womb are born nine months later! If you’re ready to apply, complete the Snowflakes Application.
