This is a free seminar covering domestic, international and frozen embryo adoptions. The seminar is an excellent way to have your preliminary questions answered, get to know Nightlight staff, and meet other families beginning the adoption journey. (Domestic, Embryo, and International Adoptions)
We will look at the core issues in adoption, which will give you understanding as to how you are linked to the other members of the Adoption Triad; the adoptee, the birth family and yourselves. The material is applicable to all forms of adoption (Domestic, Embryo, and International) and will help adopting families develop understanding and compassion for everyone involved in the adoption process. (International Adoptions) This class is offered to help potential International adoptive parents understand the issues related to forming a permanent bond between parent and child. It will also address the impact of institutionalization and the transition to a different culture. Light refreshments are provided, but you are welcome to bring dinner with you. (International Adoptions) Dr. Gary Feldman, Medical Director of the Stramski Center at Miller Children's Hospital will be leading this class to provide an overview of the medical issues commonly experienced by children who have been adopted internationally. The class will help families understand the medical and developmental effects of institutionalization, the effects to malnutrition and other known genetic, health, emotional, and developmental risk factors associated with children adopted from other countries as well as known health risks in the specific country or region where children are adopted. (Domestic and Embryo Adoptions) This class is for each prospective DAD and MOM. The class will feature a panel of adopting parents and birthmothers discussing their open adoptions. They will discuss how the type of contact was agreed upon and how it is working out for them. This is a required class for all domestic families as part of the homestudy. All domestic families who are approved and waiting for placement are cordially invited to attend our DAD class to "keep in touch". Your initial payment entitles you to attend as many times as you wish. Light refreshments will be provided but you are welcome to bring dinner with you. (For Taiwan clients and Homestudy clients adopting from China through another agency) The Asia Workshop is for families adopting from Taiwan and China. All families adopting from Taiwan through Nightlight, as well as Homestudy clients adopting from China through another agency, must take this class before traveling. This workshop will cover Chinese culture, travel experience, transition time for you and your child, and trans-racial adoption. Our adoptive families and Sabrina Chang, our Taiwan coordinator, will share their experiences and expertise. This class also gives you the opportunity to meet other families waiting to travel to Taiwan and China. Upcoming Dates: May 3
