Adopting Parent Profiles

Ken & Karen

Ken & Karen

Dear Birthmother,

You are amazing and courageous. Thank you for exploring the option of adoption for your precious child. You have a difficult decision in your path. We sincerely pray that you will find God's peace as He guides you on this journey. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Attached is some information about our family. We thank you for the opportunity to share our lives with you...

We met while we were both in the navy and stationed in Bermuda in 1994. From the moment we met, we were very drawn to each other. Karen had no compromises with Ken. He is extremely intelligent, thoughtful, selfless, loving, affectionate, funny, and amazingly level-headed. Ken fell in love with Karen because she is exciting to be with, realistic and confident, and the independent, caring woman he had hoped he would find. We dated for 4 years and married on May 16, 1998.

Our daughter Elizabeth is now three and a half and is constantly surrounded by extended family, our church family, and our cat and two dogs. We adopted Elizabeth through embryo adoption at Nightlight. She has been an integral part of our family from day one. We cannot imagine life without her. She is an amazing blessing and we are so grateful for her.

We are members of Sweetwater Community Church, which is truly our local family. Ken is the leader of the men's 'wild bunch' and on the church board of directors. Karen is involved with the media team and children's ministry.

We love spending time together and have, therefore, focused on common interests and hobbies. These include getting exercise (2 dogs and one stroller make for a big group coming down the walkway), golfing, camping, touring open houses and real estate in our area, spending time with our family and friends, traveling to new countries and cities, playing board games, reading, cooking new foods, sitting in the hot tub after a long day and renting movies to relax.

As with our hobbies, we focus on sports we can play or do together as a family. Sports we are interested in include golfing, tennis, running, hiking, camping, biking, skiing, bowling, roller blading, scuba diving and water skiing. Elizabeth, even at 3, is already a great participant in these activities.

Ken received a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute after high school. He then joined the Navy as a Naval Flight Officer flying an F14 Tomcat. After 12 years active duty, Ken switched to the naval reserves so that he could spend time in one location and be home with the family.

Karen enlisted in the Navy after high school and spent 8 years working as an air traffic controller. After the navy, she completed her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a major in Accounting and her Masters of Taxation. She received her CPA license and worked many grueling tax seasons. When Ken was stationed in San Diego 7 years ago, Karen switched gears completely and started a mortgage company. Ken & Karen are both licensed Real Estate Brokers but have great educations to fall back on if the business hits any roadblocks.

We own a company that focuses on home loans for military members. Our company, Military Home Programs, was launched in 2004 and is very successful. The company has also been excellent for Elizabeth. We are interchangeable when running our company from our home office. During her first 3 years, we took turns working while the other parent cared for Elizabeth. At 3, we put her in preschool and other activities. We also hired a full-time housekeeper/nanny. Between the three of us, we run the company, the house, and Elizabeth's schedule. With a new arrival, we would once again take over primary care of the baby for the first 3 years. It is really a wonderful setup.

We cannot have biological children but truly felt a calling to be parents. Once we found out we could not conceive a child, we moved quickly and cohesively into the adoption process. We were extremely fortunate that both of us felt comfortable with adoption. When God calls, He prepares! Never a truer statement than when we pursued our calling to grow a family through adoption.

For the past 7 years, we have lived in a suburb of San Diego. Our home is 2,200 square feet with 3 beds/ 2 baths. It's on a large lot with a very private back yard, lots of space for kids to play, and near the end of a cul-de-sac. We are currently in escrow on a 5,500 sq ft, 6 bedroom/7 bath home. We are truly invested in growing our family and having room for lots of extended family visits.

Thank you again for your time in reading this. We wish you much love and blessings.

Children: We have one living daughter, Elizabeth, born on July 11, 2006. Sadly, Elizabeth's twin sister, Carissa, passed away just prior to their birth. We grew our family through adoption but Karen is the birth mom as we adopted embryos. Elizabeth is an active, happy, social, and curious 3 year old with a remarkable sense of humor. She has blond hair, hazel eyes and is tall for her age. She has an exceptional love of life and lives each day to the fullest.

Interest and Hobbies: We truly enjoy family activities, golfing, sailing, hiking, camping and working on projects together. Ken also enjoys woodworking and cooking. Karen enjoys exercising, reading and writing. Elizabeth was previously in swimming and tumbling. Now she is trying out ballet and soccer and enjoys theml tremendously.

Home: Our home is a nice California ranch home in an established neighborhood with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. We are in the process of purchasing a 5+ bedroom home to accommodate a larger family.

Pets: We have three wonderful family pets. Our Kobi cat has been in our family for 13 years. Sampson, our German Shepard, has been in our family for 10 years and Sierra, a Rottweiler mix, has been with us for 8 years.

Finances: Ken and I are both prior active duty service members of the navy. Today, we own a mortgage company. It is a successful business that allows us to raise our family while working from home.

Why are you interested in building a family though adoption: We are not able to create a biological child. After researching adoption, we chose embryo adoption and we were successful. This time, we are excited to be pursuing a traditional, domestic adoption.

Openness to Birth parents: Words cannot express the gratitude we feel for the amazing gift of a child. Because of this, we would be honored to provide the level of relationship you desire. How could we ask for anything less?

Childcare Plans: For the first 3 years of Elizabeth's life, Ken and I split our time equally between running the business and taking care of Elizabeth. It is unique blessing that both parents have equal time caring for a child. When she turned 3, we hired a full-time housekeeper/part-time nanny, Gina. For a 2nd child, we will also be the primary care providers but have plenty of help when necessary.

Statement of Faith: Ken and I are both Christians. We believe that Jesus is our Lord and Savior and are very active members of our church.

Type of child we wish to adopt: Boy or girl, twins would be great too!
